EPT / ELM / MAPE Testing
English Placement Test
The EPT (English Placement Test) is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduates so that they can be placed in appropriate English courses. Those undergraduates who cannot demonstrate college-level skills will be directed to courses or programs to correct identified deficiencies.
Entry Level Mathematics Test
The ELM (Entry Level Mathematics) test is designed to assess the basic skill level of entering CSU undergraduate students in the areas of elementary and intermediate algebra and plane geometry. Such skills are required in three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics courses in high school.
The CSU requires you to take the EPT and/or ELM after admission and prior to enrollment in the CSU unless you are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests such as the SAT and ACT. The EPT and ELM are not admissions tests; instead, they determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT and/or the ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to register.
